♥ The Sweet Disease ♥

From canva

My grandparents died due to various complications caused by DIABETES. And oh, one of my uncles too. As of today, both my parents have that condition also. Since it’s kind of hereditary {goes with the genes}, you couldn’t blame me for thinking I’ll acquire it soon. The saddest facts about this disease are 1) Once a Diabetic, always a Diabetic. 2) You can prevent it, you can control it (up to certain extent) but you can never cure it. 3) Sweets (candies, chocolates, sodas) are mainly the enemies!; and 4) You’ll die not because of it but because of complications [pls. note the “s”].

From Wikipedia, it is defined as follows:

Diabetes mellitus, often simply referred to as diabetes—is a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar, either because the body does not produce enough insulin, or because cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced. This high blood sugar produces the classical symptoms of polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsiapolyphagia (increased hunger). (increased thirst) and

There are three main types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes: results from the body’s failure to produce insulin, and presently requires the person to inject insulin. (Also referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, IDDM for short, and juvenile diabetes.)

  • Type 2 diabetes: results from insulin resistance, a condition in which cells fail to use insulin properly, sometimes combined with an absolute insulin deficiency.

  • Gestational diabetes: is when pregnant women, who have never had diabetes before, have a high blood glucose level during pregnancy. It may precede development of type 2 DM.

Causes of Diabetes – {source}

Type-1 Diabetes– In this condition, the pancreas secretes very little insulin or completely stops producing insulin as the cells that control the sugar levels in the body are dead. This occurs as the body attacks and kills its own cells in the pancreas and this condition is known as the autoimmune reaction. Type 1 diabetes is caused due to many factors including alcohol consumption, infection or disease, removal of the pancreas by surgery and so on. This diabetes type can occur in children due to genetic reasons and in juveniles due to stress or hereditary reasons. Those affected with type 1 Diabetes are required to take daily insulin to survive.

Type-2 diabetes– In this condition the pancreas produce insulin but the cells receiving the insulin fail to be stimulated and this results in insulin resistance. As a result, there is an increase in the production of insulin and this may result in insufficient levels of insulin to control sugar level in the body. Type 2 diabetes generally affects adults. The causes of diabetes of this type include aging, being over weight and physical inactivity. This type of diabetes need not depend on insulin treatment but with proper diet, exercise and oral medication, it can be kept under long-term control.

Gestational Diabetes– This type of diabetes usually occurs during pregnancy and ends after the birth of the child. A woman who suffers from gestational diabetes has a lot of insulin in the body. However, certain hormones produced during gestation blocks the usage of insulin thereby creating an imbalance in sugar level.

Juvenile Diabetes– Juvenile diabetes is when the pancreas produces little or no insulin in a child. The causes of diabetes in juveniles are generally hereditary.

Common Symptoms are: {source}

1) Frequent trips to the bathroom

2) Unquenchable Thirst

3) Losing Weight Without Trying

4) Weakness and Fatigue

5) Tingling or Numbness in Your Hands, Legs or Feet

6) Other Signs and Symptoms That Can Occur:

Blurred vision, skin that is dry or itchy, frequent infections or cuts and bruises that take a long time to heal are also signs that something is amiss. Again, when these signs are associated with diabetes, they are the result of high glucose levels in the body. If you notice any of the above signs, schedule an appointment with your doctor. He or she will be able to tell you if you have reason to be concerned about a diagnosis of diabetes.

My mom is in the worrying mode right now because she has been diagnosed with diabetes for years now and she thinks she’s beginning to have The Complications. That makes me a little worried too. But this time around, I have to be strong for her. I can still remember the countless times she cared for me when I was a sick kid. Oh, Please Mama Mary, intercede for us. Help us pray for my mother’s health and safety. Happy birthday to you our dearest Mama Mary. Please help me also to make my mama happy. Thank you in advance. 🙂

My one big dream is to SPOIL MY PARENTS, especially my mom. What about you? Are you also like me? Please share your efforts, I want to know. Thanks!
